Resilient individuals can adapt to a variety of situations and cope with both physical and mental challenges. Resiliency may seem like something that you either have or you don’t. But it’s a skill.
Through martial arts, you will develop many different skills, including resilience. As a student, you’ll face obstacles all the time, but you’ll also practice overcoming them.
Here are a few ways that martial arts promotes resilience:
1. Increased physical fitness.
When you feel physically strong and healthy, you’re more likely to feel strong and healthy mentally, as well. So as you train your body to react and become more fit, your mind is also preparing to be stronger and more resilient.
2. Focused on learning.
Mistakes are part of the process of learning martial arts. The question is, how will you respond to a failure or a mistake? When you’re resilient, you’re more likely to focus on how you can do something differently or better the next time. You learn from the past and apply those lessons to the future. When you’re focused on learning and growing, you’re more likely to bounce back and move forward.
3. Setting short term objectives for long term goals.
Some martial arts goals will take you years to achieve. And when you’re working toward a long term goal, it can be tough to stay motivated and committed to your training. You might be tempted to give up on your training altogether. But by setting short term objectives for your long term goals, you’ll develop patience and resiliency. The more resilient you are, the more likely you are to persevere.
4. Work hard and take time for rest.
Hard work pays off. However, you must balance hard work and training with proper rest and recovery. When you’re on the verge of overtraining, it affects you mentally and physically. It’s hard to be resilient when you’re stressed out, sleeping poorly, and sore all the time. Make sure that you’re eating well, getting enough sleep, and listening to your body. Taking a rest day isn’t giving up. It enables you to keep going.
